Hello Biofarm Family!

One of the things we love most about Biofarm is connecting with you, whether it’s at the market, over messages, or when you drop by. Raw dairy is one of our most talked-about topics, and we’re thrilled that so many of you are curious and passionate about this traditional, nutrient-rich food. Since time at the market can be a little short, we’re bringing the answers to you here, so let’s dig into some of the questions we hear most often!

Why Does Raw Dairy Have to Be Sold as “Pet Consumption Only”?

This is hands-down our most-asked question! The answer lies in a mix of state laws and FDA regulations that view raw dairy as a higher risk due to its natural bacteria content. Since it’s not pasteurized, raw milk retains the good bacteria and enzymes that give it its living, nutritious quality, but this also means it doesn’t go through the heating process that kills off all bacteria, whether beneficial or harmful. Florida, like many states, restricts raw milk for human consumption, classifying it as “pet food” to meet compliance with these safety guidelines.

Interestingly, these restrictions came into play back in the early 1900s when pasteurization was introduced as a way to reduce bacterial contamination, particularly in large-scale operations where cleanliness was harder to control. Over the years, pasteurization became the standard, partly as an easier way to handle large-scale dairy and to reduce any potential risks in supply chains. However, the regulations haven’t adapted much to today’s small-scale farms where cleanliness, animal health, and hands-on management are prioritized. While our raw milk for pets meets high standards of quality and safety, the choice for you and your family ultimately rests with you!

What’s the Difference Between Raw Dairy and Pasteurized Dairy?

Let’s start with the basics: raw milk is alive! Unlike pasteurized milk, which has been heated to kill bacteria, raw milk still has all its natural enzymes, probiotics, and nutrients intact. These elements make raw milk a more complete, digestible, and nutrient-dense food. Many people find that raw milk supports their health in unique ways, and as a living food, it’s as close as you can get to milk straight from the cow. Pasteurized milk may be more common, but raw milk is truly nature’s original superfood!

If I’m Lactose Intolerant, Can I Have Raw Dairy?

Maybe! Many of our customers who are lactose intolerant find that raw dairy is easier to digest. For those who are new to raw dairy, we suggest starting with raw yogurt because it’s naturally cultured. This means the lactose is already partially broken down by beneficial bacteria, which can make it gentler on the stomach. If you’re curious, start with a small amount of yogurt and see how you feel!

Why Does Raw Milk Spoil Quicker, and How Can I Keep It Fresh?

It's important to understand that raw milk doesn’t spoil in the same way pasteurized milk does; instead, it sours. Because raw milk is a living food, the naturally occurring bacteria can cause it to sour, but it remains safe to consume. In fact, many cultures intentionally drink soured milk for its health benefits, similar to fermented products like yogurt and kefir.

That said, raw dairy is sensitive to temperature. In warmer weather, it can sour more quickly, so proper storage is key. Keeping raw milk chilled at or below 38°F will help maintain its quality and delicious flavor for as long as possible!

Whole Milk vs. Skim Milk: What’s the Difference?

Whole milk is all about that creamy goodness! It includes all the natural cream, which is loaded with healthy fats and fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, and E. If you’ve ever been lucky enough to pour a fresh glass of raw whole milk, you know just how rich and satisfying it is. Skim milk has the cream removed, which makes it lighter in texture and lower in calories. However, it’s worth noting that skim milk is not a complete food; it mainly consists of sugars and can contribute to weight gain. Historically, farmers have fed skim milk to pigs to help fatten them up. Even though it may have fewer calories, it doesn’t provide the nutrients our bodies need. Either way, we think both have their place, depending on your preferences!

Here to Help, Always.

At Biofarm, we’re so passionate about providing a connection to real, nourishing foods and empowering you to make informed choices. The more we can share about raw dairy (and everything else we raise with love), the closer we feel to you, our farm family. If you ever have more questions or just want to chat, we’re here for it! Feel free to reach out anytime, or come find us at the market.

Thanks for your support, curiosity, and commitment to nourishing food. We’re honored to bring these traditions back to the table, one bottle of raw milk at a time.
